Genuine antique copper-plate engraving  by Wilson Lowry for George Selby Howard's "Cyclopedia of Arts and Sciences. On An Entire New and Improved Plan...".

The Cyclopedia, or Encyclopaedia, was an idea manifested during the Age of Enlightenment that began percolating in the mid 1600s. George Selby Howard was a distinguished English Scientist and lawyer who was influenced by others, notably the Denis Diderot who published a pictorial volume on developments in industry and manufacturing. The discoveries in optics, electricity, horology, surveying etc. were the foundations of inventions in both Sciences and Arts.

Condition: Excellent printed on hand-made "laid paper" with complete plate mark from original copper-plate (Slight discoloration on top edge outside plate-mark).

Size = plate-mark 23 x 37.5 cm (9.2 x 15 inch).

Armillary Sphere: Also known as a spherical astrolabe, armilla or amil it is a model of celestial objects on a spherical framework of rings. , consisting of a spherical framework of rings,with either the Earth of sun at the center, thus representing the lines of longitude and latitude in space and other astronomically important features. The eliptic is an imaginary line that traces the orbit of any celestial body. As such it differs from an celestial globe that serves to map the constellations on a smooth surface.
