Illustrators were employed by publishers and /or authors to create the identities and styles that reflected either the historical setting (ie 16th century Shakespearian) or the popular contemporary design trend (Regency, Art Nouveau, Art Deco etc) Some, like Joaeph Clayton Clarke (aka "KYD"), based his entire flamboyant career on the characters of Charles Dickens.
