Product Description

Australian Landscape "(Murray River) Cliff Scenery" Alexander Sutherland Murray 1898

Antique Gravure after Alexander Sutherland Murray from his folio "Twelve Hundred Miles of the River Murray"

A.S.Murray had Charles Sturt's Expedition Account "Two expeditions into the interior of southern Australia, during the years 1828, 1829, 1830, and 1831 : with observations on the soil, climate, and general resources of the Colony of New South Wales " published in 1834. He planned to see how the drought, that became known as the Federation Drought 1895-1902, has affected the vital trade and wildlife of the Murray since Sturt's voyage in similar conditions 60 years before. He was critical of the impact European land development and introduced species had changed the river landscape. However, it seemed the stunning limestone cliffs remained unchanged.
