In the 1700s a new form of affordable portraiture was reclaimed from the Greek Classical past= "Shade profiles", or as we now identify them, "silhouettes". Also known as "shadows" asthey skillfully captured the identiying features of the owners profile. THe peak of their popularity was the Regency (1800-1820) usually being displayed in groups on the walls of the family home.
