Portraiture has a proud history as a mainstay of Art across all cultures. Having a portrait painted was a confirmation of power, fame, infamy, status or acheivement. It was a way of recording one's likeness for posterity. Not everyone could afford the services of famous painters and sculptors but there were more modest alternatives that emerged over time as history records.
