Thomas Webster had an enchanting talent for depicting children that made him incredibly popular in Queen Victoria's Reign. "The Smile" depicts children of a school bench, delighting in each other's company and that of the onlooker. (all except the little boy with the dunces-cap at the rear and the child with the toothache in the foreground!)In 1846 he became a full member of the Royal academy, having his genius identified and nurtured from childhood. His father was a member of George III household. He excelled in conveying quiet humor and geniality.
